No complete stocking has been found in excavations of the colonial town of Magdalena de Cao Viejo, Peru—excavations that provide the first material evidence of knitting in the Americas. Of the two artifacts of cotton knitting that are identifiably stockings, one has stripes of natural and light brown, and the other has stripes of natural and dark brown with a checked pattern.
This project combines both elements: a stripe pattern in natural and light brown accented by bands of the checkerboard pattern in natural and dark brown.
Materials: 100% organic cotton yarn, laceweight
Needles: sets of 5 double pointed, size 2 (2.75 mm) and size 1 (2.25 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
Other: Stitch marker, stitch holder, tapestry needle
Finished size: Foot, about 9 inches (23 cm) long and 8 1/4 inches (21 cm) in circumference
