The unique process of winding this shawl’s multicolored warp and randomly choosing the next end to thread leads to cloth with more depth.
When Rebecca Fox first learned to weave, she couldn’t wait to start throwing the shuttle for each new project. However, now she finds herself more fascinated with the design process, especially when it comes to color.
The idea for this project started as a shawl that used 19 colors of 8/2 Tencel in the warp and black in the weft. That original version is now also her favorite travel accessory, as it goes with everything and doubles as a small lap blanket.
For this shawl, she used a green/gold palette. She designs this type of warp during the winding process by holding multiple thread colors (usually three to five at a time) as she measures the warp. She finds that this practice creates cloth with more depth and interest, while helping her burn through her copious stash—and it significantly speeds up winding. When threading the heddles, she randomly chooses an end from the current bundle, which makes for wonderful and unplanned color juxtapositions.

Weft: 8/2 Tencel, Hunter, 1,391 yd.
